Always verify locally
Septic regulation in the United States is set at county level and changes frequently. Tank sizing rules, setback distances, perc test procedure, permitted system types, inspection triggers and pumping requirements can all differ between two adjacent counties in the same state.
Before you spend money, sign anything, or decide not to act, confirm the position with your county health department and a licensed local professional.
Cost figures
Prices on this site are national ranges collected and dated using the method described in How We Research Costs. They are published so you can sanity-check a quote and set a budget. They are not quotes, they are not binding on any contractor, and your job may legitimately fall outside them. Only local quotes tell you what your work costs.
Calculators and tools
Our calculators produce estimates from published research tables, using the small number of inputs you give them. They cannot see your tank, your household’s actual water use, your soil, or your county’s rules. A garbage disposal, a home business, a rental turnover or a period of heavy guest use will all change the real answer.
Treat any calculator output as a starting point for a conversation with a professional, never as a substitute for having the system inspected.
Safety
Never enter a septic tank, and never lean into an open one. The gases inside — hydrogen sulphide and methane — displace oxygen and can render a person unconscious within seconds. People die this way every year, including people attempting to rescue someone else.
Never allow anyone to stand or drive on a tank lid. Keep children and pets away from any open access point. If a lid is cracked or missing, secure the area and call a professional the same day.
We do not publish instructions for physical work on septic systems, and any physical work you undertake is entirely at your own risk.
